PoorMansLobbyist.org is the virtual "lobbyist" for the rest of us -- middle class men and women that can't write a check for thousands of dollars every time we need the help of our Congressman or Senators.
The mission of PoorMansLobbyist.org is to improve society and quality of life by restoring accountability of elected Congressmen and Senators back to the voter, so that government initiatives and legislation can again prioritize and focus on issues that positively impact individuals and their families, not the special interests of paid lobbyists.
PoorMansLobbyist.org was founded by the dad of a son with autism after spending years trying to get his Congressmen and Senators, both at the State and Federal level, both Democrat and Republican, to address the epidemic of autism. After getting nowhere, except for canned responses that did not even mention autism, this dad decided to leverage the power of the Internet to create a virtual "lobbyist" that would expose the lack of action (or worse, negative action blocking progress) on important issues such as healthcare for kids with autism. The vision is that this exposure will hopefully restore accountability among our elected officials.
If you have ever attempted to contact your Congressmen or Senator about an important issue, you likely had an eye-opening experience about the current state of our democracy. Unless you attached a couple thousand dollars to your letter, you likely received a lengthy, canned reply that had little or nothing to do with the actual concern you raised. If you attempted a phone call, it's likely that the receptionist was the only one that heard your point (and then quickly forgot it).
Welcome to modern day "representation" by your Congressmen and Senators. The unfortunate reality is that many politicians today believe that they need to prioritize their time and energy around the needs of their corporate citizens, not the individual voters. Family issues too often take a back seat to the needs of large corporations. Your family apparently needs a lobbyist to be heard in today's democracy!
While we may not be able to afford a traditional lobbyist to take our representatives out to expensive dinners, make huge campaign donations, and whatever else it is that those powerful lobbyists do, we can generate awareness and attention for important issues that matter to us, the individual voters, and what action (or lack of action) our representatives are taking on these issues.
PoorMansLobbyist.org will focus on issues that impact families and individual voters, not what will help increase profits at already profitable corporations. There are already plenty of politicians and lobbyists focused there. For example, PoorMansLobbyist.org will work to finally make it illegal to deny prescribed health care for kids with autism. Most states today allow insurance companies and self-insured employers to discriminate against developmentally disabled children, and our lawmakers have been silent on this for years. Unfortunately, a parent of a child with autism doesn't have the same influence as a lobbyist for a health insurance company, even though one is focused on improving a life, while the other is focused on greed.
